Whether you're looking for intricate Christmas tree ornaments laser cut to perfection or unique laser engraved Christmas ornaments to add a personal touch, the possibilities are endless. From delicate snowflakes to charming reindeer, laser-cut Christmas decorations can transform any space into a winter wonderland.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through the process of making beautiful wooden Christmas ornaments using laser engraving technology. Let's get started!

Materials Needed

  • Laser cutting machine (We used the OMTech Polar 50W for this project)
  • Basswood sheets
  • Computer with design software (We'll be using LightBurn)
  • Spray paint
  • Wood oil

Step-by-step Guide for Laser Cut Christmas Ornaments

Step 1: Design Your Ornament

  1. Start by finding a suitable Christmas ornament design. You can create your own or use pre-made designs
  2. Open your design software (we're using LightBurn) and import your chosen SVG file.
  3. Resize the ornament to an appropriate size. A good standard size is around 3 inches wide by 4 inches tall, but you can adjust based on your preferences.
  4. Ungroup the elements of your design if necessary, especially if there's pre-existing text you want to change.

Step 2: Add Personalization

  1. Select a font for your personalized text. LightBurn allows you to scroll through your installed fonts easily.
  2. Type the name or message you want to add to your ornament.
  3. Position the text within the ornament design, ensuring it's centered and fits well.
  4. Group the text with the ornament design to keep everything together.

Step 3: Prepare for Laser Cutting

  1. Duplicate your design if you want to make multiple ornaments in one session.
  2. Arrange the designs efficiently on your workspace to minimize wood waste.
  3. Set the appropriate parameters for engraving and cutting. For our 50W desktop laser engraver, we set our engraving speed and power to 300mm/s at 45% and our cutting parameters to 30 mm/s at 10%.
  4. Ensure that the engraving layer is set to "Fill" and positioned above the cutting layer in your software.

Step 4: Prepare Your Laser Cutter

  1. Turn on your laser cutter and connect it to your computer.
  2. Place your basswood sheet in the laser cutter.
  3. Use the "Frame" function in your software to ensure the design fits within your material.
  4. Double-check your design using the preview function to make sure all elements are present and correctly positioned.

Step 5: Laser Cutting and Engraving

  1. Start the laser-cutting process.
  2. The machine will first engrave the personalized text and design details.
  3. After engraving, it will cut out the ornament shape. Then, you’ll have the finished results!

Step 6: Post-Processing

  1. Carefully remove the cut ornaments from the laser cutter.
  2. Optional, but you can sand the ornament with sandpaper to get rid of any rough edges or debris/burn marks.
  3. If you want your wood ornaments in their original luster, simply rub some oil into the wood to preserve it. You can also opt to spray paint the ornaments for a brighter, custom effect.
  4. Allow the wood to dry completely before handling or hanging the ornaments.

Tips for Success:

  • Always do a test run on a small piece of scrap material to ensure your settings are correct before cutting your final design.
  • Keep your laser cutter clean and well-maintained for the best results.
  • Experiment with different types of wood or acrylic for varied effects.
  • Consider adding ribbons or twine to hang the ornaments.
  • These personalized ornaments make great gifts, so consider making extras for friends and family.

Troubleshooting:

  • If the engraving is too light, increase the power or decrease the speed.
  • If the cutting doesn't go all the way through, increase the power, decrease the speed, or add more passes.
  • If you're experiencing burning or charring, reduce the power or increase the speed.
