OMTech Laser Updated On

Hey there, fellow crafters and small business owners! Ever wondered how to transform a plain piece of leather into a stunning, customized patch you can place on anything? Well, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re adding a unique touch to your hats, clothes, or other accessories, laser engraving leather allows you to achieve detailed designs and impeccable quality.

Ready to embark on a laser leather engraving journey? Take a seat, and let me walk you through the entire process of laser engraving on leather. We’ll cover everything from preparing your design and dialing in the ideal settings to treating and caring for your leather patches afterward. Let’s get started!

How to Laser Engrave Leather Patches

Step 1: Prepare Your Design

design with LightBurn

First things first, let’s talk designs. Open up Lightburn, the laser engraver software that connects with your OMTech laser engraver. Start by importing your logo or design. Aim for dimensions that suit your project. For example, we’re going to laser engrave leather patches for a hat, so our design is 68 mm wide and 70 mm tall. Designate two layers for cutting and engraving.

Step 2: Dial in Your Laser Settings

We’re using our OMTech 60W laser engraver/cutter for this process. Remember, the settings that work for us may not work for you, even if your leather laser engraving machine has the same wattage. We used a speed of 170 mm/s at 14% for engraving and a speed of 30 mm/s at 30% for cutting, with the line interval at 0.07.

Step 3: Engrave and Clean the Leather

Place your leather securely on the laser bed. We recommend using strong magnets or clamps to keep the material nice and flat, as leather tends to curl up or move during the engraving process. Run the engraving layer first, then clean off the material. We use LA’s Totally Awesome cleaner and a microfiber towel to get those smoke and burn marks off the surface.

Step 4: Cut the Patches

Reset your laser to the home position and run the cutting layer. This will neatly separate your patch from the leather sheet. Now you have custom laser engraved leather patches ready for the next phase!

How to Treat Leather After Laser Engraving

Now that you’ve got your laser engraved leather patches for hats, let’s keep them looking sharp and feeling supple. Treating leather after laser engraving isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about durability and quality too.

Step 1: Initial Cleaning

Straight after your patches come off the laser, give them a good cleaning. Use a mild cleaner, like LA's Totally Awesome, along with a microfiber towel. Gently scrub away any smoke residue and leftover bits from the engraving process.

Step 2: Deep Cleaning for Nooks and Crannies

Next, pull out a soft-bristled brush—an old toothbrush works wonders here. Carefully clean the deeper engravings to get rid of any tiny debris hiding in those intricate details. This step ensures your patches look their absolute best.

Step 3: Leather Conditioning

leather conditioning

Leather, just like us, needs a little moisturizing love. Grab a good leather conditioner and a clean, soft cloth. Apply the conditioner in gentle, circular motions. This will keep the leather flexible and prevent drying or cracking. Let the conditioner absorb for the recommended time before wiping off any excess. Tip: Don't overdo it on the conditioner—the leather should feel rejuvenated, not greasy.

Step 4: Apply a Leather Protectant (Optional)

Consider using a leather protectant to fend off scratches and moisture. This creates a barrier that helps your patches stay in tip-top shape, especially if they’ll be out in the wild.

Step 5: Let Them Breathe

After all that pampering, give your patches a little time to breathe. Lay them out flat in a well-ventilated area and avoid direct sunlight.

Conclusion

And there you have it, folks! Laser engraving leather patches is a blend of art, science, and a sprinkle of patience. With these steps, you’ll craft patches that not only look stunning but also stand the test of time.
